David Brooks of the New York Times stated, “Those “Question Authority” bumper stickers
no longer symbolize an attempt to distinguish just and unjust authority.instead, they symbolize an attitude of opposing authority.” This was taking
from his article in the New York Times, “The
Follower Problem.” I agree with David Brooks statement that, “We live in a
culture that finds it easier to assign moral status to victims of power than to
those who wield power.”

We are seeing this every day. Look at the
police shootings that we are seeing in the media. There are so many innocent African
American who have lost their lives to senseless police brutalities resulting in
protests, and in other cases rioting. In every case they state that the victim
had a gun. Those victims are not in power, but the shooters are. The media
waste no time digging up the bad stuff related to the victims. The media do all
that they can to make the victims of the police shootings look as if the
shooting was morally right.
Oh, and let’s not
forget about the innocent police officers who have lost their lives to
senseless killings as well. What kind of picture do the media paint when it
involves an innocent police officer being gunned downed by a civilian? It’s
always a pretty picture!
Barack Obama, like it
or not is the President of the United States. Throughout his entire time of
Presidency; people has been for or against him for whatever reason. When George
Bush got out of office, the economy was a mess! President Barack Obama walked
into that mess and for some odd reason; many Americans want to put all the
blame on President Barack Obama for that mess.
The question that
stands is does America have a leadership problem or a followership problem? I
would have to say that America has a followership problem. We witness this all
the time when the United States invades other countries. That’s something that
I don’t get… I mean, what business is it of the United States as to what people
in other countries do in their country? You don’t hear other countries telling
us how to do things. Let those people be! I bet if the United States minded
their business, a lot of terrorist acts against the American people would slow
down. It’s like we always have to prove a point.
Take for example all of the talk we've been hearing about stemming from Black Lives Matter. In all honesty, do
black lives really matter? Many folks
argue that the protests that have taking place are just another act for attention.
I can recall watching one of the news stations reporting on a protest in
Charlotte, North Carolina after Keith Lamont Scott was gunned down by a police
officer. The news reporter was interviewing several young black men that night,
and I remember the reporter saying to the guy, “I hear you guys chanting out
black lives matter.” He continued talking to the black guy and said, “Many
people are wondering how black lives matter when you’re killing your own people
every day.” At first I was outraged, but then I started to see where the news
reporter was going with his statement. How can we as black people expect black lives to matter to all lives if black lives don't matter to black lives?
America really in truly
has a followership problem simply because we as American people are caught up
in how we are perceived. If everybody else is doing it its right; right?
